Beans usili

Paruppu usili is an common side-dish had with rice & curry in South-Indian cuisine.

'Usili' means disaggregated pieces, here dal/lentils are blend, formed as large dumplings, steamed and finally disaggregated, hence the name.  Beans usili is the most common type, they are had with kolambu saadham ie curry rice.

Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Serves: 2

Ingredients required

For dumpling
  • 1 tsp jeera/whole cuminseeds
  • 1 red chilly
  • 1/4 cup chana dal
  • 1/4 cup Tuvar dal
  • Pinch of salt
Other
  • 1 tbspn of oil
  • 1 red chilly, broken
  • Handful of curry leaves
  • Beans, finely chopped - 1 cup
  • Salt, to taste
  • Grated coconut (to garnish)
  • Coriander leaves (to garnish)
Also note that I have prepared them mild, in order to please my kid, you can increase the amount of red chilly if you want spicier.

Method

In a blender, drop cumin seeds, salt and red chilly, blend once and add soaked chana & tuvar dal.  Grind them till they are coarse.   Take them out of mixer, form dumpling and steam-cook for ten minutes or till done.

After steam cooking, let it cool thoroughly, only then you will be able to break them into fine particles.  Alternatively,  in a kadaai, heat oil, temper with rai/mustard seeds.  Wait till they splutter, also add curryleaves and red chilly.

Add in beans, giving a quick stir.

Close the lid and cook till beans are done, sprinkling water occasionally if needed.  Finally, stir in salt.

ow, add in  dal dumplings, and as you add shred them into fine pieces through your hand.  Simmer the flame for two minutes.

Serve hot garnished with coriander leaves and grated coconut.

Happy cooking :)
